About Us
Annually, three million cases of child abuse, neglect and abandonment are reported in America, and one of these victims dies every four hours due to that abuse. In Josephine County alone, over 130 children are currently in the foster care system.
In 2006, Parkway Christian Center launched Royal Family Kids' Camp of Grants Pass with the mission to create positive memories for foster children in Josephine County who have been abused, abandoned and neglected. Through a one-week experience at camp, the seeds of hope, happiness and wholeness are planted in each child's life. Every effort is made to treat each child like "royalty", and to make them feel special and unique. All of the campers come directly from our local Children's Services department, and are between the ages of 7-11.
Every activity at camp is designed to show each child that they have their own unique value and worth apart from the past abuse they have endured. With 60 trained adult volunteers for 40 campers, each child receives healthy adult attention and love, as well as the experience of family. The number one rule at camp is: have fun! Each evening features fun presentations such as the Oregon Reptile Man and OMSI. The week concludes with "Everybody's Birthday Party", which celebrates each child's birthday with an enormous birthday celebration, carnival, and presents for each camper. Each child receives a "memory bag"; a duffel bag full of things to help them remember camp, including a photo album full of pictures from the week at camp, which is often the only pictures the children will have from their entire childhood.
This one week at camp gives the campers a whole new perspective about their future and who they really are. Camp staff continue to hear amazing stories from Royal Family Kids' Camp campers confirming the difference one week at camp made in their lives. One child Psychologist, Becca Cowan Johnson, states that "One week at Royal Family Kids' Camp is more beneficial than a year of therapy."
The children and their families are not charged to attend camp; the camp is completely funded by local donors and Parkway Christian Center. The most significant need Royal Family has is scholarship funding. The costs over $30,000 to put on the camp, which amounts to about $750 per child.
